Come on... it's no big deal. I had been in both positions before - 'Random girl' & S.I. I don't have to repeat the later experience because it is same as yours. But the first one went like this.
I went to pickup my friend from airport, as he said, he had brought his white friend along. This guy looked very casual. My friend introduced me and I said "what's up" and in return he said something I didn't understand. I was looking at this guy puzzled, searching in the back of my mind for some english word that sound like it. The guy repeated it three times. I still didn't get what the hell he was saying. My friend explained, laughing, "he said ###" - equivalent of namaste in my mother tongue (not hindi). After that I was able to comprehend the sound clearly when the guy said it again. I guess I just wasn't really listening the first few times.

Dude,
That's a hilarious post. Mirrors some of my experiences. I once told a chick I had an elephant named Gajendra as a pet growing up and used to ride him to school daily. She fell for it.

Normally I'd probably agree. But proper planning on my parents' part ensured that my name neatly divides in half to form a common American name, without selling out the brown.

If I had a name that had to be heavily tweaked, on the other hand, I'd be with you.

If a girl puts on "foreign face," she's not worth your time. But that said, the mere presence of a "monosyllabic American version" of your name shows that you've already begun accommodating those provincial xenophobes who can't be bothered to give you the attention that you (and your name) deserve.
